An Aside...

... the DataGrid is suboptimal and difficult to customize and extend. The time has come for a fresh start on the grid.

• can be slow (frequent layout calculations)
• Hard to customize (inline styles)

@buyog The dgrid is not back-compat with DataGrid, won't be dojox, so it is not directly replacing, rather a genre alternative.

Bottom line: use the right tool for the right job.

Grid Hacking 101

1. Optimize configuration
2. Review structure
3. Consider formatting needs
4. Address query performance

Configuration Hacks

• Use a more performant store
  • ItemFile*Store only for small (or static) payloads
  • better: QueryReadStore / JsonRestStore
• Adjust your rowsPerPage size
  • This will take some trial and error

Structure Hacks

Protip: the more columns you show, the slower you'll go.

• The Grid's paging only affects rows, not columns
• Eliminate empty (i.e. 0-cardinality) columns
• Restrict number of columns / add a "details" view
• (It's hard to grok that many columns anyway)

Formatting Hacks

• Explicitly set row height via the Grid's rowHeight property (auto height is expensive)
• Use cell formatters sparingly
• Or even better, do complex cell calculations on the server if you can (and memoize the results!)

Query Hacks

• consider paging size carefully (balance w/ query fetch time)
• consider progressive load (query sharding) if query is slow
